SENIOR GARDENER

The Senior Gardener is responsible for running maintenance crews overseeing several clients’ properties.  Maintaining the highest degree of customer satisfaction is paramount, as is ensuring that the vision inspired by Craig Bergmann and his design teams retains its beauty by applying their horticultural knowledge and design skills in garden aftercare.  We desire individuals who possess the following traits:

  • Advanced horticulture knowledge and formal training
  • Extensive plant identification skills, primarily perennial and seasonal plants.
  • Personable, outgoing, able to positively represent the company to others
  • Strong organization, communication, and supervisory skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of previous landscape experience
  • High degree of problem solving skills and sensibility
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications and computer use

Major Responsibilities/Activities

  • Develop a good working relationship with the client and be responsive to their design preferences and budget.
  • Supervise and develop staff (3-5) to work productively and provide opportunities to learn and advance.
  • Perform field inspections to ensure the quality and completeness of work performed.  Identify potential additional work needed, and proactively address any watering, disease or maintenance issues and coordinate any needs with crew, head gardener or client.
  • Work with the head gardener in the development of realistic work plans with tasks and timeframes, and maintain resulting crew schedules on a computerized dispatch board
  • Coordinate activities and interaction with other contractors if requested by the client.
  • Monitor equipment use and maintain vehicles and equipment in good working order.

Related administrative functions with this position entail the following:

  • Process orders and billing for client visits.
  • Work with the client to develop garden plans for the following year and coordinate agreement.
  • Maintain time reporting, supervision and any disciplinary actions staff.
  • Monitor schedule, make purchases for clients, coordinate adjustments with nursery based on the availability of plant materials in order to maintain or improve crew productivity %.

Additional required Skills:

  • Ability to operate a light dump truck and trailer.  Possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.
  • Illinois pesticide operator’s license.
  • Good physical condition with the ability to lift 50 pounds, work outdoors in all types of weather, and handle extended schedules seasonally.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus.

CONSTRUCTION COORDINATOR/ESTIMATOR

 Position Summary

The Construction Coordinator/Estimator monitors all project schedules developed by design and installation staff to optimize team efforts from initial project design and development through installation. The position serves as the primary liaison with company staff during design, bidding, contracting and installation processes.  Timely communication of issues, consistent work flow and high quality deliverables are of the essence.  Reporting to the Company President, this position requires both office and field work.

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead estimator function for all schematic and final landscape plans including site analysis, critical review of job specifications and translation of designs into actual budgets.
  • Coordinate timeline and management of multiple concurrent projects to ensure high quality standards are met on time and on budget.
  • Management of installation project schedule
  • Anticipate potential problems in schedules and institute controls and contingency plans to address them.
  • Assist design staff to define outcomes and expectations based on project requirements.
  • Assist design staff with permit submittal paperwork and coordinate with the Design Department for needed documents.
  • Assist design staff with bid acquisitions and the maintenance of bid specification standards.
  • Assist in the coordination of the project handoff to installation project managers and garden care staff.
  • Work with installation project managers in the development of realistic work plans with tasks, timeframes, milestones, resources, and dependencies.
  • Coordinate with installation project managers on project timing or delays and troubleshoot foreseeable conflicts.
  • Coordinate and monitor contractors to complete installation timelines as scheduled.
    • Provide assistance to installation managers for oversight of subcontractor work to ensure the execution of drawings is implemented correctly in the field.
    • Attend with subcontractors and installation project managers on-site coordination meetings at the beginning of every project.
    • Provide clarifications/troubleshooting during construction.
    • Perform field inspections with installation project managers to ensure specifications are being followed.
  • Maintain the approved subcontractor list for the company. Interview and review examples of work for new contractors as needed to meet company deadlines.
  • Monitor overall scheduling for subcontractors availability and ability to meet CBLD installation deadlines.
  • Schedule needed inspections or coordinate to ensure these are being scheduled.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Minimum 5 years project management and cost estimating professional experience
  • Strategic planner with excellent organizational skills
  • Motivated self-starter who enjoys working in a team environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, cost estimating and project management software packages
  • Strong project management skills managing complex, multi-faceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth
  • Experience in managing and motivating people to meet high performance standards
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details

INSTALLATION SENIOR FOREMAN

The Installation Senior Foreman is responsible for installing CBLD designs while making sure that the project installation holds true to the design.  The Foreman is responsible for ensuring timely communication of issues encountered in the field, consistent work flow and high quality deliverables. While 5 years of previous landscape construction experience and strong organization, communication, and supervisory skills are required for this position; individuals with an appreciation and flair for evaluating the integrity of designs will be the successful candidate we seek.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervision of crew.  Ability to communicate in Spanish is needed.
  • Act as the company representative to the client and others during this phase of the project.  Coordinate with staff, other contractors, and municipalities as needed to ensure consistent work flow and high quality deliverables.
  • Work with installation managers in the development of realistic work plans with tasks, timeframes, milestones, resources, and dependencies.
  • Completion of paperwork relating to deliveries, returns, additional work, change order & replacement order paperwork, client requests, management requests and crew time sheets.
  • Supervise the installation of plants according to design using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge and brush trimmers, and axes.  Also, proficient in the use & operation of powered equipment such as chain-saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, backpack blowers and pruning saws.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained and all safety standards are kept.
  • Able to drive company vehicles and obtain a pesticide license upon employment.

INSTALLATION LABORER

The Labor staff is the base on which CBLD is built.  Installation Laborers  grade and prepare garden beds and install the plantings to bring garden designs to fruition.  Work is seasonal.  Opportunity for advancement with increased horticultural knowledge and experience.

Major Responsibilities/Activities

  • Install plant material properly and in the right conditions to allow the plant to thrive.
  • Layout areas according to the design planned.
  • Rough grading tasks include prepping garden areas, grade, install paving, steppers.
  • Transplant and install plant materials, prune and trim, water.
  • Load/unload trucks, job site cleanup.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, use basic garden tools and power tools.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills a plus
  • Additional compensation for candidates able to assist with foreman’s responsibilities possessing valid Illinois driver’s license, paperwork/computer skills, or pesticide license.
